Psalm 51:12 (KJV)
“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”
When Joy Feels Distant
Have you ever felt like you’re doing all the “right” things, going to church, reading your Bible, saying your prayers, yet something still feels… missing? That deep sense of joy, that closeness to God, seems far away.
The truth is, sin is a joy-thief. It may not always show up in dramatic ways. Sometimes it creeps in quietly, through pride, selfishness, bitterness, or neglecting time with the Lord. And over time, it drains the life out of our fellowship with God.
Born With a Need
David said in Psalm 51:5 (KJV), “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” That’s our starting point. We are born sinners. And because of that sinful nature, we naturally tend to drift toward self rather than God.
Sin doesn’t just make us guilty before a holy God, it also breaks our fellowship with Him. It leaves us spiritually dry and stagnant, just going through the motions.
But God Wants Restoration
The good news? God doesn’t leave us in that condition. He lovingly calls us to come back. Just as David prayed in Psalm 51, we too can cry out:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10 (KJV)
When we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us (1 John 1:9). And more than forgiveness, He gives us restoration, the restoration of joy. Not the fleeting kind the world offers, but the deep, abiding joy of His salvation.
Why Confession Matters
Unconfessed sin doesn’t make God love you less, it just keeps you from experiencing His presence fully. It’s like static on a radio signal. You’re still His child, but the clarity is gone. Confession clears the air and draws us back into joyful communion with Him.
Don’t carry around the weight of sin. Don’t let guilt or pride keep you distant from the One who gave His life to draw you near.
A Prayer to Return
“Lord, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Restore the joy of Your salvation and keep me close to You. Amen.”
